The film tells the real-life story of acclaimed conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler, who was investigated by the US army as "a gifted artist who sold himself to the devil". Musical director of the Berlin Philharmonic, Furtwangler remained in Germany throughout the Nazi era, but never saluted Hitler at concerts, helped many Jewish artists, and struggled throughout this time to maintain a distinction between art and politics.
