Academy Award Nominee Peter Cattaneo returns to cinemas with The Rocker; a hilarious comedy about a failed drummer who is given a second chance at fame.

Director of the worldwide phenomenon, The Full Monty, Cattaneo delivers another gem in The Rocker, which promises to be this summer’s must see, laugh-out-loud comedy.

Rainn Wilson (The Office, An American Workplace; Juno) stars as Robert ‘Fish’ Fishman - the extremely dedicated and astoundingly passionate drummer for the eighties hair band Vesuvius, who is living the rock ‘n’ roll dream until he is unceremoniously kicked out of the band. Twenty years after his rock star fantasies are destroyed, just when Fish has given up all hope, he hears that his nephew’s high school rock band A.D.D. is looking for a new drummer. They reluctantly make him the newest member of the band, giving him the chance to reclaim the rock God throne he always thought he deserved.

Starring alongside Wilson as the members of A.D.D. are recording artist Teddy Geiger, Emma Stone (Superbad) and Josh Gad (21: Bringing Down the House). The ensemble cast also includes Christina Applegate (Anchorman; Married With Children), Jason Sudeikis (What Happens in Vegas; Saturday Night Live), Will Arnett (Blades of Glory; Arrested Development) and Jane Lynch (Talladega Nights, The 40 Year Old Virgin).

"the cliché-filled plot resembles far too many others"

I hadn't heard much about this film so I was pleasantly surprised to be invited to a screening so far before its release. The film is well cast. It's nice to see Christina Applegate back on our screens, but most notably it wouldn't have been what it is without Rainn Wilson's excellent performance. His charm and persona is what gives this film a soul and as an actor I hardly know, he could eventually be one of the future comedy superstars, such as Seth Rogen or Will Ferrell.

The Rocker's downfall may be its heavily worn subject matter. The cliché-filled plot resembles far too many others and even the rather unique pieces feel drowned out by the surplus of stereotypical events and dragged out dialogue but there are some strong comedic moments, almost outweighed by the more heartfelt ones. If you're looking for down-and-out comedy, this might not be crude enough for you. But, if you want something simple, with a nice rhythm, this could be the right beat for your Saturday afternoon.
