Despite her neurotic best friend Wally’s (Bateman – Arrested Development, Juno, Up In The Air) objections, she chooses to go for this on her own and opts for the services of a charming sperm donor (Wilson – Watchmen, Hard Candy). Unbeknownst to Kassie, her plans go awry when Wally drunkenly makes a last minute switch that isn’t discovered until seven years later when he finally meets her precocious – though slightly neurotic – son. "it left me cold...just like a turkey baster would"
So apparently women are doing it for themselves. No wonder really, obviously our super go-getter skills scare away all the men. So much so that we can't even get them to impregnate us unless it's with a turkey baster and for a generous cash reward. Marvelous. And the men who do love us are now such spineless saps that it takes them about a million years to get us. Wow, what a way to sh*t on feminism's head.
I think originally this story may have been quite edgy and comical but the Hollywood treatment has made sure that it's just another McFilm. Unlike that other woman-wants-baby-and-she-wants-it-NOW offering, The Back-Up Plan, The Switch is actually vaguely funny and just clever enough to stop you wishing you didn't have eyes or ears. It passes for light, dumbed-down entertainment without being offensively annoying, though I think this is almost entirely thanks to the cast and
primarily little Thomas Robertson as Sebastian. That little boy is a-do-ra-ble. Seriously. Not that this is the first time a small child has saved a million bucks project from being unwatchable, and that's just scary. And really, really sad.
I also feel really sorry for Jennifer Aniston, who plays our go-getting heroine Kassie. She also can't get a man, can't get a baby, can't seem to do a good film, or at least get praised for one due to her talent rather than pure pity. AND her ears have grown. Seriously. They are huge. And that equals getting old. Poor thing.
I've not much else to say about The Switch to be honest. It was unmemorable and uninspiring; something to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon if you've really got nothing better to do. It definitely won't enrich your life much.
