Keith Lemon: The Movie - OUT August 24 - Best inventions in movie history
August 15 2012
When you were a child at Christmas, you would spend copious amounts of time writing a wishlist for Santa in the mere hope that when you woke up on Christmas morning, you would find your hopes desire in your stockings.
Words such as “hoverboard” and “dream machine” aren’t the items on a typical child’s list, but what if they were real? Along with James Bond’s jet pack and a potion that makes you lose 200 lbs overnight, we celebrate the release of Keith Lemon: The Film (24th August) and his intelligent creation of the “Lemon-Phone”, by looking at some of the best inventions ever made in film, that we can only wish were actually real...

“The knife that toasts” – Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy
This invention would make your mornings clean, quick and easy. Toasting your bread has never been more straightforward with this device which enables you to cut through the loaf of bread whilst it toasts one slice at a time.

“Hoverboard” – Back To The Future: Part II
Skateboards are so noughties. If you want to be ahead of the game, get cracking on inventing Doc’s hoverboards which Marty McFly goes around town with as he attempts to escape from Biff Junior and his group of miscreants.

“Dream machine” – Inception
Only Christopher Nolan can make such a simple concept as having a dream, into something completely mind-bending and argumentative. However, this dream machine proves to be quite a challenge as people who become too dependent on it’s “power”, can become addicted and as a result, never dream again! Nonetheless, it wouldn’t hurt to be able to own one of these devices, purely for un-inception-like activities.

“Weight loss potion” – Nutty Professor
Maybe to not the Nutty Professor’s extent, but I’m sure people wouldn’t mind a small sip of this potion after a very heavy and bloating meal (perhaps this could aimed more towards women) or the exceptionally large Sunday roast. Either way, don’t go overboard and end up giving off some unfortunate bodily functions at the dinner table.

“Delorean Time Machine” – Back To The Future
Arguably the greatest fiction invention in movie history, the Delorean time machine propels Marty into a series of adventures which enable him to realise that his dad was a bumbling, peeping-tom and his teenage mother had a particular liking to “Calvin Klein”. Words of warning: make sure you don’t run into your then-teenage mother and realise how un-innocent she once used to be. The effect of this will be everlasting and could possibly leave psychological scarring.

“Knit-o-Matic” – Wallace & Gromit
The knit-o-matic is an invention Wallace created to wash, dry and shear sheep. After testing out the machine on Gromit, he finds the “shearing” element isn’t as gentle as he would’ve liked.

“3-course-meal chewing gum” – Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
All the multi-flavoured Hubba-Bubba in the world wouldn’t be able to produce something as amazing as a 3 course meal in the form of chewing gum. Unfortunately, Willy Wonka failed to mention that the after effects can make you feel a little “blue”.

|
“Invisibility Cloak” – Harry Potter
Everything in Harry Potter is a dream come true, from the Weasley’s joke shop right down to Hogsmeade’s butterbeer. But the greatest invention of all is Harry’s invisibility cloak. Without this vital piece, Harry wouldn’t have been able to achieve any of his heroic tasks.

“Jet pack” – James Bond (Thunderball)
James Bond has many gadgets, but some of the ones that are the most memorable are the ones that have helped the 007 agent in times of desperate need. Bond’s jetpack helped him to escape from men in black suits (which always signify the baddies) as he landed stylishly next to his Aston Martin.

“Swiss army knife” – Get Smart
Unless you’re James Bond, handling a swiss army knife with both hands tied isn’t the best decision to make, especially if this is all being carried out 30 thousand feet in the air. Luckily for Steve Carrell, his on-screen partner was able to come to the rescue.
