Not Today Satan it’s Hurricane Bianca: A Conversation with Bianca Del Rio

The Fan Carpet Chats To...

Bianca Del Rio, the alter ego of comic Roy Haylock and season 6 winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, is a self-professed “clown in a gown.” This hilariously hateful comic is known for her foul mouth and unapologetic humor, but her victims hardly have time to feel the sting before she zips on to the next topic.

Besides, Bianca is quick to point out that she’s the biggest joke of all. The NY Times calls her “The Joan Rivers of the Drag World,” and Joan Rivers herself called Bianca’s humor “So funny! So sharp!” Based on her sold-out world comedy tour, her first standup special, “Rolodex of Hate” is now available worldwide on Vimeo and in the US on Logo TV. 2017 will see Bianca busier than ever, with the release of her first feature film “Hurricane Bianca,” the launch of a new global comedy tour and several more surprises in store.

The Fan Carpet had the pleasure of speaking with Bianca ahead of her eagerly awaited UK tour; Not Today Satan. She tells us how it feels to be embarking on her UK tour, what fans can expect and her love for Costume Design and Performing…

If we go back to the beginning, was there a defining moment for you to get into the entertainment industry?

It wasn’t a conscious choice, it’s just the path I gradually ended up on. It was always the safest and most joyous place to be.

How does it feel to be embarking on your UK tour?

I’m very excited! The UK and Ireland has been amazing to me. So many wonderful and supportive people. Not to mention the fabulous places I’ve gotten to visit… and drink!

What can fans expect from your tour?

My brutal honesty, big lashes, and lots of sequins! And maybe a few laughs along the way.

You do a lot of work behind the scenes in the costume department as well as in front as a performer which do you prefer?

I enjoy both; it’s a great balance for me since they’re two completely different outlets. I’ve been working in Costume Design since I was 15 years old, and I’ve been doing Drag since I was 20, so I couldn’t imagine my life without either.

Who inspires you in the industry?

Several people… for different reasons; in the Drag world specifically – Lady Bunny, Sherry Vine, Peaches Christ, Varla Jean Merman, Coco Peru, and Jackie Beat. These old whores have been at it for years!! They’re great, and each of them have their own unique style that they’ve perfected over the years… many many many years.

Other than your highly anticipated tour, what else do you have coming up?

I’m incredibly excited to share a movie that my brilliant friend Matt Kugelman wrote and directed called Hurricane Bianca that will be released worldwide online on September 23, 2016. I also have a few “secret” projects on the horizon that ‘ll be able to share with the world soon. Stay tuned!!
