A Bloody Knockout – Get Involved with Grindhouse Style Horror flick Six Hot Chicks in a Warehouse
'A neon soaked ultraviolent grindhouse style horror movie'
Six Hot Chicks in a Warehouse or SHCIAW as it has become known to the cast and crew working on the project was a movie idea created back in 2011. It's main influences being the grindhouse style in particular which has seen a resurgence with films such as 'Hobo With a Shotgun', 'Dead Hooker in a Trunk', 'Turbo Kid' particularly grabbing attention over recent years.
It was simple. First came the title. Something Stupid. Something which would grab attention and divide opinion. Something which people would make assumptions on and cause lively debate.
In an unusual order the story was built from the title. Firstly how could we connect these together? Girls, a warehouse? The obvious was a creative space or photography studio. This gave us our villain. A body obsessed photographer with a real gripe about being transparent in a world of beauty. Next came the horror and the far fetched storyline? The photographer taking extreme measures to 'improve' himself and stumbling on a method of revenge for years of being rejected and ignored. This same method providing a catalyst for turning the girls against themselves in a bizarre sequence of violent and uncharacteristic events.
SHCIAW has a number of genre elements involved with everything from Comedy, Drama and Horror. It is set to be unpredictable and refreshing dispelling assumptions.
So far we have approximately 13 minutes of the film which were shot in a block in October 2015. It's the next block which is where we get to the business end of things and more importantly where the action starts!
Director Simon Edwards said ‘From the moment we created the absolutely bizarre concept of SHCIAW it quickly became obvious to me that this film was one which grabbed attention both positive and negative. I'll be honest, being quite a shy character myself the prospect of directing this script terrified me. The title is the equivalent to running down the high street shouting out a swear word as loud as your lungs will allow.
I can't stop people making assumptions however I can work on the fact that this is an incredibly self aware film, at times making fun of the genre we sit alongside. I think the best way to describe the film is a chick flick crossed with a horror movie which is marketed at men.
I take great pride in that I have primarily always been a director who catches drama and emotion within a film. Something which is sorely missed with a lot of genre films where a number of scantily glad victims are lined up and taken down one by one. This is different, each character is exactly that.. a character and i want the audience to laugh and scream with what happens during the course of the movie.’
Jessica Messenger who stars as Mira added ‘I first received the script for Six Hot Chicks in a Warehouse back in 2011, when Simon was approaching people for the roles. Back then I knew that we had something unique and special and since the re-writes that have taken place over the last 4 years, I knew Simon had created something really substantial. A lot of the cast and crew come from a drama background, Simon’s main focus has always been detail to character and multi-layered scripts, which I think is why I have struck such a great relationship over time.
Mira is me in a nutshell. It's like she was written for me, even though I was just another person he was talking to at the time. I've been pencilled for 4 years and I have had THAT much time to get every detail of her right. For me, Mira is my love letter to the 90’s queens of the silver and small screen, the women who made me fall in love with it all in the first place. I took great influence in style from the likes of Buffy Summers, Sidney Prescott, Sucker Punch, The Craft and so forth.
Simon has a great eye for detail and an intention to make this film one of a kind. With a sense of Grindhouse we have all come to know and love, it still has a British flavour to it and that I love. He's not recreating anything, and with the description he has penned for this film, "A neon-soaked, Ultra-violent Grindhouse movie" , I couldn't of described it better myself if I tried.’
