A HERO RETURNS: After More Than 20 Years, Skuli Returns in First Skuli and the Battle for Niabok Character Reveal
The Fan Carpet: Publishing has unveiled the first character reveal for Skuli and the Battle for Niabok, bringing its unlikely alien hero back to life more than two decades after he was first created.
Some heroes are born. Some are made.
And some spend more than 20 years waiting for technology to catch up with them.
Today, The Fan Carpet: Publishing is officially reintroducing Skuli, the hero at the heart of the upcoming video game Skuli and the Battle for Niabok.
The first character reveal offers a glimpse of the revived Skuli cautiously making his way through a dark alien cavern, surrounded by an environment that hints at the dangers waiting for him on Niabok.
He doesn't speak. He doesn't need to.
After more than two decades, a hero returns — and Niabok needs him.
From clay to a living character
Long before this version of Skuli could walk across the screen, he existed in a much more tangible form: clay.

Skuli was originally created by Marc Jason Ali as part of a multimedia design project more than 20 years ago, with the character physically sculpted and developed around the possibilities of animation and interactive entertainment available at the time.
The original concept drew particular inspiration from the tactile character animation associated with Aardman and the Wallace & Gromit films. That handmade influence hasn't been discarded in bringing Skuli into the present.
It's become part of his identity.

Rather than reinventing Skuli as a completely different, polished digital character, his revived design retains the qualities of the original model: the elongated face, oversized boots and gauntlets, distinctive green eyes and, importantly, the imperfect cracked surface of something that still looks as though it could have been formed by hand.
The technology has changed.
Skuli hasn't forgotten where he came from.
More than a redesign

The new incarnation isn't intended simply as a modern redesign of an old character.
It's an attempt to realise what was imagined all those years ago.
Modern animation, game-development and filmmaking tools now make it possible for Skuli to move and perform in ways that would have been extraordinarily difficult to achieve when the original project was conceived.
For his first reveal, that performance is deliberately understated.
There is no dialogue and no exposition. Skuli cautiously explores an unfamiliar cavern, watching his surroundings as he moves deeper inside.
And judging by the environment around him, caution is probably a very good idea.

Skuli is being developed as a largely silent protagonist, with his personality communicated through movement, reactions and physical performance rather than dialogue.
That approach also connects the revived character back to his animation roots: performance comes first.

The Battle for Niabok begins again
The character reveal is only the first glimpse at the world being developed for Skuli and the Battle for Niabok.
The original concept imagined Skuli travelling to Niabok after a distress call and becoming caught up in a battle involving the planet's inhabitants and the hostile Dominari.
Those foundations remain part of the revived project, but the intention isn't simply to reproduce a decades-old student project exactly as it once existed.
The Battle for Niabok is being rebuilt and expanded using the possibilities available today while retaining the characters, humour and personality that made the original worth returning to in the first place.
And there is plenty more from Niabok still waiting to be revealed.
For today, though, the spotlight belongs to the character who started it all.

More than 20 years after being shaped from clay, Skuli is moving again.
And his battle for Niabok is only just beginning.
