A Masterpiece Reimagined: Everything You Need to Know Before Jane Eyre Opens at Southwark Playhouse Elephant

27 August 2026

For the past month, The Fan Carpet has been following the journey of Jane Eyre from the rehearsal room to opening night.

We've spoken to the creative team, met the cast and gained a unique insight into how Charlotte Brontë's literary masterpiece has been reimagined for the stage. Now, with opening night just around the corner, here's everything you need to know before the curtain rises.

A Story That Has Endured for Generations

Originally published in 1847, Jane Eyre remains one of the defining works of English literature.

Charlotte Brontë's novel has inspired countless adaptations over the years, but its central themes of resilience, equality, identity and self-worth continue to resonate with every new generation.

It's those themes that lie at the heart of this latest musical adaptation.

A Creative Team with a Shared Vision

Throughout our conversations with co-book writer and co-director John Caird and co-director Megan McGinnis, one thing became abundantly clear.

This production has never been about modernising Jane Eyre for the sake of it.

Instead, every creative decision has been driven by one question:

How do you honour Charlotte Brontë's novel while allowing musical theatre to tell the story in its own language?

From the intimate staging to the ensemble storytelling, every element has been designed to serve that vision.

An Ensemble Unlike Any Other

Perhaps the production's most distinctive feature is its ensemble-led approach.

Rather than relying solely on Jane to narrate her own story, the entire company shares responsibility for carrying her voice throughout the performance.

It is an imaginative theatrical device that preserves the novel's first-person perspective while embracing the collaborative nature of live theatre.

An Outstanding Company

Speaking to members of the cast, it quickly became apparent how much affection they have for both the novel and the musical.

Whether discussing female empowerment, the responsibility of portraying beloved characters or the excitement of bringing Jane Eyre to UK audiences, every conversation reflected genuine enthusiasm for the material.

The production also places real young performers at the heart of Jane's early journey, helping establish the emotional foundations of the story with authenticity.

An Intimate Home for an Epic Story

Although Jane Eyre spans years and travels across Yorkshire, this production has deliberately chosen the intimacy of Southwark Playhouse Elephant.

Rather than relying on elaborate scenery, the production invites audiences to focus on the performances, music and storytelling, allowing Charlotte Brontë's words and Paul Gordon's score to take centre stage.

It's an ambitious approach that promises an experience unlike many large-scale musical productions.

Almost Time

Our visit to the rehearsal room offered only a glimpse of what audiences can expect, but it was enough to leave us eagerly anticipating the finished production.

Over the past few weeks we've explored the creative vision, spoken to the cast and discovered the thinking behind this unique adaptation.

Now there's only one thing left to do.

Jane Eyre opens at Southwark Playhouse Elephant on 28 August, with press night taking place on 8 September.

Stay tuned to The Fan Carpet for more exclusive coverage from our Jane Eyre media day as we continue our series exploring the people bringing Charlotte Brontë's timeless novel to the stage.
