Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei offered Aunt May role in Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man

09 July 2015

Now that we know who our new Spider-Man is in the forthcoming Marvel and Sony co-production, the attention has fallen to who will join Tom Holland in the new films.

Variety report that sought after Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei has received an official offer to star as the youngest Aunt May ever in the rebooted franchise.

It is unknown at this point if 50 year old Tomei, who can currently be seen in Empire has accepted the role, and neither Marvel nor Sony are commenting on the report.

Aunt May has traditionally been played by much older actresses in Spider-Man's previous adventures; Rosemary Harris took on the role in Sam Raimi’s trilogy at the age of 75, whilst Sally Field was 66 when she took the role in Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man franchise.

So far all we know about the new Spider-Man is that Holland who is best known for his role in The Impossible will portray Peter Parker in High School, it all not be an origin story, will feature villains not seen in previous films and will be directed by Cop Car’s Jon Watts.

We know that Tom Holland's Spider-Man will debut in next year's Captain America: Civil War, does that mean Tomei's Aunt May will also? Time will tell.

Tomei returns to cinemas with Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck, from filmmaker Judd Apatow this August and Jessie Nelson’s Love the Coopers with Ted 2 star Amanda Seyfried on December 4.
