Anna Wintour talks style, Prada and THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE with David Letterman

25 August 2009

Editor in chief of American Vogue, Anna Wintour, made a rare appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman last night in New York to promote the upcoming behind the scenes look at the magazine, THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE, coming to UK cinemas on 11 September. After admitting that he doesn't know anything about fashion and doesn't read Vogue regularly but still knows of Wintour, Letterman asked, "you are bigger than what you do for a living. Is that a fair assessment?"

Wintour responded, "I read in The New York Times this week that I'm an ice queen, I'm the Sun King, I'm an alien fleeing from District 9 and I'm a dominatrix," Wintour joked. "So I reckon that makes me a lukewarm royalty with a whip from outer space. What do you think?"

Wintour also played coy when Letterman said that the film The Devil Wears Prada was made about her and her organisation.

"Well I seem to remember that actually the movie was a work of fiction and we really like fiction at Vogue," she replied.

Asked about her reputation, Wintour admitted, "I'm very decisive and I try and give very clear direction to the people that I am working with and sometimes unfortunately they don't hear the answer they would like to hear. As my publisher says in the movie, I‘m not always warm and cuddly but I appreciate wonderful work, creative talented people. What I liked about the movie is that it really showed all the hard work that goes into the making of the magazine."

THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE is an unprecedented look behind the scenes at the world's most influential fashion magazine, Vogue. Under the leadership of legendary editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, the editorial staff set out to assemble their biggest issue ever.

Award winning director, R.J. Cutler takes an intimate, and often funny, look inside the hallowed hallways of Vogue. Jet-setting through the fashion capitals of the world, he chronicles the tedium of staff meetings, the scrutinising of designers new collections from the front row vantage of the catwalk shows and the chaos of a high glossed cover photo shoot with Sienna Miller in the streets of Rome. Behind these doors he reveals the stressful, entertaining and demanding process it takes to create this fashion bible and most importantly, the extraordinarily passionate people at its heart.
