Award-winning Canadian comedian John Hastings returns to Edinburgh Fringe with his latest show: The Times They Are A John Hastings.
With a 17-year comedy career under his belt, John will be sharpening his razor-keen wit to share insight on topics including Covid, TV auditions, mental health, kinky sex, alternative spirituality, psychedelics, self-acceptance and cat ownership.
A shockingly near middle-aged comedian, John is described as a suburban Canadian who has unexpectedly found himself on a life path filled with international adventure and foolishness. Despite facing the challenges of his generation, John embraces his millennial identity and refuses to be defined by the failures of others. He immigrated to the United States during a time of political turmoil, and developed a love for the country while memorizing and reciting everything stupid that Americans say.
Alongside tales of his most idiotic escapades from the 90s, John's personal life has been full of ups and downs, including heartbreak, numerous trips to art galleries and museums, and a series of intense sexual escapades. He has also had several interactions with law enforcement, including a bizarre encounter with a tow truck driver after hitting a pig with his car. Warning: may contain kombucha.
Winner of the JFL Homegrown Award, Coca Comedian of the Year, Canadian Comedy Awards nominee and One to Watch selection by the Comedy Network - John has been lauded as one of the circuit’s hardest-working comedians. He hosted Late ‘n’ Live at Edinburgh Fringe from 2015-2019 and has appeared on BBC3, Comedy Central and BBC Radio 4.
Aside from John’s immense comedic talents, his claims to fame include being heckled by Dennis Rodman, getting a standing ovation to nobody on America’s Got Talent and having the most major incidents of any act at the Edinburgh Festival, including multiple stage invasions.
Despite it all, John's unique experiences have shaped him into a confident, bald rebel who is unafraid to own his unique look. He has shared his life story with others through his writing and performances, providing a glimpse into a life full of excitement and exploration and now it’s time to share that with you.
John has a degree in theatre and knows way too much about politics, the Grateful Dead, anarchism, immigration and wrestling. He formerly hosted the wrestling podcast: Wrestler Review.
The self-proclaimed ‘chirp as f**k hippie idiot’ says Fringe attendees can expect: “a tall man telling a hysterical short story for as long as possible”.
