Benedict Cumberbatch lays Doctor Who and Star Wars: Episode VII rumours to rest

13 April 2014

Sought after British acting talent Benedict Cumberbatch who most recently provided the voice and movements to Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has ruled out the possibility of appearing in Doctor Who or Star Wars: Episode VII.

Cumberbatch, who stars as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous character in Steven Moffat's acclaimed Sherlock, has revealed in the past that he has no desire to take on the role of the Time Lord, despite reports that he was in the running to take over from Matt Smith last year, the role later went to Peter Capaldi.

Disappointing fans further at the Oz Comic Con, The Radio Times reports that Cumberbatch said "I'm never gonna play the Doctor - and nothing to do with the Whoniverse."

Addressing the rumours that he is attached to feature in Star Wars: Episode VII, he added "I would've liked a part in JJ's new Star Wars but it won't happen, sadly."

Cumberbatch said last month that he feels he has "overexposed" himself, will play Richard III in an upcoming BBC Two adaptation and returns to Middle Earth as Smaug and the Necromancer in The Hobbit: There and Back Again on December 12.
