‘Best Original Song’ Golden Globe Nominations SKYROCKET In Spotify Streams Following BARBIE’s What Was I Made For? Win

The 81st annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place on January 7th, honouring the best films, TV shows, and performances of 2023. Oppenheimer, Succession, and Barbie dominated the winners list, celebrating their immense mark on 2023 entertainment. 

Wealth of Geeks analyzed the Spotify streaming statistics of each nominee in the ‘Best Original Song’ category for Motion Picture, to identify their increase since the prestigious nomination. 

Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s “What Was I Made For?” won Best Original Song, giving Barbie the title. Since its nomination, this ballad’s Spotify streams have increased by an impressive 57 million (56,802,411). Following Barbie, “What Was I Made For?” was widely trending on TikTok as the soundtrack of ‘Girlhood’, where users shared their experiences of growing up as girl.  

 

 

Dua Lipa and Mark Ronson’s, “Dance the Night” was another nomination for blockbuster Barbie, with an increase of 51 million (51,134,679) streams since its ‘Best Original Song’ nomination. 

Completing the Barbie trio of nominated songs was “I’m Just Ken” by Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson, which has seen an increase of over 5 million streams (5,197,589) since its Golden Globe nomination. 

The iconic "Peaches" by Jack Black, Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Eric Osmond, and John Spiker from The Super Mario Bros. Movie secured a nomination, with an increase of 3 million (3,679,177) Spotify streams since the awards’ announcement. 

Next is Lenny Kravitz’s “Road to Freedom” from Rustin, which has seen an increase of 66,279 in Spotify streams. 

 

 

The final Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song was Bruce Springsteen’s, “Addicted to Romance” from She Came to Me, which has had an identified increase of 61,706 Spotify streams since its nomination.  

A spokesperson for Wealth of Geeks commented on the findings “This data analysis highlights the impact that our favorite movies have had in 2023. Each nominated song has been streamed at a significantly high volume, thus revealing the audience’s enjoyment of the movie off-screen.  

“It is also fascinating to identify the impact of the ‘Best Original Song’ nomination where we can observe a clear increase in streams since the Golden Globes’ announcement.”

Methodology: The streams of each nominated song were found by searching for them on Spotify and noting the figures when the nomination was announced. This was repeated when the winners were revealed on January 7th.
