09 February 2012

BAFTA nominated, Scottish funnyman Billy Connolly famed for the likes of The Man Who Sued God and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events has been confirmed as the latest addition to the cast of Peter Jackson's mammoth prequels The Hobbit.

Connolly will take on the role of dwarf warrior Dain Ironfoot in the Peter Jackson two-part adaptation of the JRR Tolkien book, and Jackson tells The Hollywood Reporter "We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connelly, the Big Yin himself.

With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of The Hobbit is now complete. We can't wait to see him on the Battlefield!"

He joins the impressive cast of Cate Blanchett, Martin Freeman, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, James Nesbitt, Graham McTavish, Ian Holm, Lee Pace, Stephen Fry, Benedict Cumberbatch, Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly, Barry Humphries and Richard Armitage.

Connolly was last seen as King Theodore in Jack Black's Gulliver's Travels and will voice royalty as King Fergus in Disney's Brave on August 13 ahead of the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14.
