Boxer-Turned-Actor Andy Gatenby Talks About His New Film RENEGADES Following Successful Starring Role Opposite Billy Murray

05 August 2021

Just months after Andy Gatenby was seen starring alongside award-winning actor Billy Murray in British thriller film, ‘Nemesis’, the boxer-turned-actor has now landed an even bigger role in a new film.

Produced by Shogun Films, ‘Renegades’ is a London-set revenge movie, which sees a quartet of ex-Special Forces vets taking on a violent Eastern European gang that killed their comrade.

The film’s producer, Jonathan Sothcott, described the movie as a mix of ‘Harry Brown’ meets ‘The Wild Geese’.

Rising star Andy Gatenby, 34 from Portsmouth, will be starring alongside some worldwide recognisable faces in the movie, such as Hollywood’s Danny Trejo (Heat; Con Air; Breaking Bad); Lee Majors (The Six Million Dollar Man); Michael Paré (Gone); Ian Ogilvy (We Still Kill the Old Way; Death Becomes Her); Nick Moran (Harry Potter; Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels).

On the stellar cast he’s sharing the set with, Gatenby said “To be acting alongside these experienced actors is a testimony to how hard I’ve worked and how far I’ve come in just a few short years.”

The married father of two then described the plot and the character he plays in the film “A retired Green Beret soldier is murdered by an international drug gang in London, so four of his veteran SAS comrades set out to avenge him, dispensing their own brand of justice on the streets of London.

“I play a guy called Andre and he’s one of the Eastern European gang members. It was a good, fun role to play. Getting a chance to play a baddie in the film is always fun!”

Shogun founder Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott, who is also in the film, added, “Although set in London, this is a truly international action movie with a cast of iconic genre legends. The film is non-stop, hard-hitting action and [Director] Daniel Zirilli is delivering to an incredibly high standard.”

Well-known British stars Patsy Kensit; Stephanie Beacham; Danny Bear; Paul Barber and Billy Murray also star in the film.

“I was cast with Billy Murray in the last film, ‘Nemesis’,” Andy added. “Although we are not in any scenes together in this film, it’s always good be around him and soak up his experience. I look up to him an awful lot and being around him puts me at ease straightaway.”

Known for his long-term roles in ‘The Bill’ and ‘EastEnders’, Billy Murray repaid the compliment back to Andy, stating “Andy is terrific professional that I really enjoy working with and it is great to see him rising through the ranks. He’s a lovely man.”

Shogun Films producer, Jonathan Sothcott, also took time out to praise the rising star, “It was great having Andy in the second Shogun movie, he’s a great addition to the cast and puts his heart and soul into it.”

“The whole film is wrapped now, so all the filming is finished and I’m really pleased with how it went,” said Andy. “The films are getting bigger; the roles are getting bigger and better, and everything is going in the right direction for me.”

Renegades’ is expected to be ready to screen at the American film market in November 2021.

Andy Gatenby was unbeaten in six fights in his professional boxing career during 2013 and 2014, but was forced to retire from an eye injury, just as he was about to challenge for the English title.

Instead, he turned his hand to acting after reaching the finals of BBC2 show, ‘Special Forces – Ultimate Hell Week’ in 2015. He attended a part time drama school in London for two years and continues to attend acting workshops, even recently undertaking stunt training too.

The ex-athlete has steadily established a presence in his new profession, landing leading roles in TV series ‘World’s Most Evil Killers’ and feature film ‘Card Dead’.
