Boyhood actor Ethan Hawke has joined the cast of The Magnificent Seven

03 March 2015

Joining Hawke in the remake of the 1960 Western classic will be Denzel Washington, Guardians of the Galaxy actor Chris Pratt and Haley Bennet, who has been announced as the female lead.

The original, itself a remake a of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, followed seven gunslingers who are hired by a woman to protect an oppressed Mexican village from a gang of outlaws. The 1960 film stared Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson and Steve McQueen with John Sturges as director.

The remake will see Hawke and Washington pairing up once again with director Antoine Fuqua.

MGM is hoping this reunion will spell success for the film as it did with 2001’s crime drama Training Day, which outperformed expectations on release and earned Hawke an Oscar nomination and Washington an Oscar win.

The most recent draft was penned by True Detective creator Nic Pizzolato and has been reworked by Blind Side and Saving Mr Banks writer, John Lee Hancock.

Roger Bimbaun is set to produce the film.
