Cate Blanchette returns to Middle Earth for The Hobbit

08 December 2010

Lord of the Rings fans can rejoice as Cate Blanchett will reprise her role of as the powerful elf Galadriel in the prequel films The Hobbit. While her character doesn't actually appear in the book she’s certainly old enough to appear in the film’s timeline, and she’s also in both The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, which take place long, long before this story.

She joins Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and the recently confirmed Andy Serkis who reprises his role of Gollem. They join the newly confirmed Ken Stott, Sylvester McCoy, Mikael Persbrandt, Ryan Gage, Jed Brophy and William Kircher. In an official press release, Peter Jackson said “Cate is one of my favourite actors to work with and I couldn't be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films.”

McCoy, still probably best known as the seventh actor to play The Doctor in Doctor Who, has won the role of wizard Radagast the Brown. Shooting is said to begin in New Zealand in February for a December 2012 release and follows Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, who journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug.
