Chloë Thomas, Nidhi Gupta, Karen Maine and Marchella De Angelis Are Powerful Women In Film and TV We Are Shouting About This Month!
BAFTA and RTS nominated, Chloë Thomas most recently directed all episodes of the psychological thriller The Deceived, created by Lisa McGee (Derry Girls) and Tobias Beer. This features breakout new star Paul Mescal (Normal People) and airs on Channel 5 in August.
Just before that, Chloë directed 3 episodes of Harlots, season 3 (Hulu/BBC) and Victoria (ITV/Masterpiece), working with actors such as Samantha Morton, Lesley Manville, Jenna Coleman, John Lynch, Laurence Fox and Alex Jennings.
Chloë is attached to direct the feature film Making Babies, a rom-fertility-com by Deborah Frances-White (The Guilty Feminist), with Redwave Films (The Full Monty).
Previously, Chloë was known for comedy directing; Sharon Horgan’s early sitcom Angelo's, produced by Damon Beesley (the Inbetweeners) featuring Miranda Hart, followed by being BAFTA nominated for directing the first ever series of Horrible Histories.
Chloë also develops her own pilots through her company One Glove Films. Her current project is a Civil War reenactment sitcom Roundheads and Cavaliers starring Cariad Lloyd, Alex Carter, David Schaal, and Perry Fitzpatrick.

NHS frontline doctor Nidhi Gupta, who has been inspired to crowdfund a documentary on pandemics called Start.Stop.Repeat
Nidhi was treating patients suffering from the most deadly symptoms when Coronavirus hit, meaning she herself contracted the virus. Months later, her recovery is still ongoing and the questions she has been asking about pandemics for several years now remain. What does the future hold? Will we learn from the past? Will the pandemic change anything about how we live and our society looking forward?
Start.Stop.Repeat, which she is currently fundraising for with the backing of funding platform Greenlit, will examine the history of pandemics in interviews with scholars, activists and political figures. She will take on the role of director and producer to uncover some of the positive effects of previous global health scares and examine how we can use these findings to cultivate a less dystopian post COVID19 outlook.
Start.Stop.Repeat will be a non-profit project and guarantees that any income generated will go to Food Bank charities. Please follow this link to join the fundraising campaign.
Karen is the writer and director of 'Yes, God, Yes’; a groundbreaking coming of age comedy starring Natalia Dyer ('Stranger Things') and Alisha Boe ('13 Reasons Why'). It is being released across all UK digital download platforms on 17th August.
'Yes, God, Yes' follows sixteen-year-old Alice (Natalia Dyer), who has always been a good Catholic. When an innocent AOL chat turns racy, she discovers masturbation and is overwhelmed with guilt. Seeking redemption, she attends a mysterious religious retreat to try and suppress her urges but it isn't easy, especially after a cute upperclassman (Wolfgang Novogratz) starts flirting with her.
This semi-autobiographical masterpiece from Karen started life as a comic short in 2017. It premiered as a Vimeo Staff Pick, received 3 million views, and was covered widely in the press, with the Guardian calling it "the film nailing teenage sexuality". It also won “Best Short” at the St. Louis Film Festival. It is inspired by her own Catholic upbringing, as she attended a Catholic school for 12 years in Des Moines, Iowa and struggled to talk about sex in her early teens.
Karen also co-wrote Obvious Child (2014), which premiered at Sundance and was distributed by A24. The feature length 'Yes, God, Yes' had its world premiere at the 2019 SXSW film festival and won a Special Jury Recognition Award for Best Ensemble.
Karen has previously lived in London for seven years but currently resides in Brooklyn.
We're very excited to be working with Marchella to promote her directorial debut 'Woolf Women' that premiered at Cannes last year. Marchella, previously known for her quirky and artistic initiatives spanning art, property and hospitality over the last two decades, has recently turned her attention to this feature length documentary starring world famous downhill skateboarder, Jenny Schauerte.
'Woolf Women' is a true account of Jenny and her 4 friends who accept a challenge to go to Sumela, an ancient monastery built in AD386, and skateboard the route down. It clings precariously to a vertical rock face with a terrifying sheer drop of 1,280 metres and is located deep in the Pontic mountains of Turkey.
The spotlight is on Jenny who has been struggling to get over the sudden loss of her father. Her friends are worried about her welfare and state of mind. In order to seek solace and distraction, she and her friends skateboard 5,500kms each way to reach Sumela, through stunning and unchartered territory. Woolf Women is a film about personal courage, friendship and adventure.
Marchella before film:
2001- Marchella jointly launches the iconic club - Lover Lounge Shoreditch with friends Hassan, Stefan and Michelle.
2006- She designed, rebranded and opened Cotswolds88hotel, which was listed in Conde Nast Traveller’s – Top 65 Hot Hotels of the World 2008, as well as being on the cover page for Black Amex and other prestigious publications.
2009- She collaborated with pop art impresario Kate Garner to design a unique collection of wallpapers called ‘ The Hedonist Collection ’, introduced under the banner of De Angelis & Garner. They are now permanently archived in the Victoria & Albert Museum.
2014- She designed and launched AngeNoir, a luscious party venue in Cheltenham and in 2015 exported the experience to St Tropez as a Pop-Up at Hotel Sezz, where she played host and DJ for a full summer stint.
2017- Victory8events was initiated as a sideline vehicle to host charity events whilst celebrating equality for women. From art to cars, the events encompassed some of her passions, as well as a personal desire to work with charities.
2019- Marchella decided it was time to develop her career as a producer, director and presenter. Her debut film documentary Woolf Women was presented in Cannes for the first time.
