Chris Weitz replaces Gary Whitta as scriptwriter of stand-alone Star Wars film

Earlier this month it was announced that scriptwriter Gary Whitta had exited the stand-alone Disney and Lucasfilm Star Wars spin-off after completing the first draft, it has now been announce that Chris Weitz has come aboard to pen the film.

Weitz’s involvement should not affect the film’s release date, which is set for December 16 2016.

The film will be the first of three stand-alone spin-offs, all focusing on a different Star Wars character. It is rumoured that the first will be the origins story of either Boba Fett or Han Solo but as of yet nothing is confirmed.

Gareth Edwards is directing the film and has been meeting with actresses to fill one of the female role, including Rooney Mara and Felicity Jones.

Chris Weitz is known for his work on the adapted screenplay for the film About A Boy for which he received an Oscar nomination.
