Comedian Seann Walsh Releases Short Silent Comedy Webisode The Drunk Online

30 April 2016

THE FIRST IN A SILENT ERA STYLE COMEDY MINI-SERIES IS FREE TO WATCH ONLINE

Seann Walsh, stand-up comedian and regular on TV shows such as Live At The Apollo, has just released the first ‘webisode’ of a comedy mini-series free to watch online.

The Drunk is directed by Gabriel Foster Prior and features Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Walsh arriving home late at night rather worse for wear. First he struggles to pay for his taxi; then he struggles to break into his own house.

The five-minute short, which is planned to be the first in a series, also features parts for comedians Pete Firman, Jocelyn Esien, Rebecca Humphries and Eastenders legend Ricky Grover.

Since its release it has been shared around the comedy world by fellow comedians including Walsh’s ‘BFF‘ Romesh Ranganathan and Noel Fielding, who has shared it three times on Twitter and calls it “Hilarious”. Beyond The Joke said it was “what the comedy industry is raving about”.

The film was shot by talented up-and-coming DOP Dave Pimm, fresh from shooting another short, Patriot, which was nominated for last year’s short film Palme D’or at Cannes Film Festival. Music is by Foz Foster, guitarist from cult 90s Britpop band David Devant & His Spirit Wife.

Walsh and Foster-Prior produced the film independently and are now in the process of preparing to shoot the follow-up with the same team.

Gabriel Foster-Prior says “We made The Drunk in a weekend with a small crew and budget. But we tried to be creative and make something visually playful. Seann’s sent me the script for the second episode and it’s hilarious. I can’t wait to make it. We’re interested in talking to distribution partners but if not we’ll just make it ourselves again and release it for free!"

Seann Walsh adds “I was in a silent comedy for Sky and it reminded how much I loved it when my mum used to put it on when I was a child. So I started revisiting a lot off Chaplin’s work again and was in awe. For some reason, we’ve stopped making this wonderful style of comedy and I wanted to try and do something that would bring it to contemporary audiences. It had to be a simple idea as I was going to have to fund it myself. However, even a simple idea needed a lot of work from a great team (that Gabriel managed to put together). This would have been impossible without the help of everyone involved so I am very grateful. Hopefully, this is not the last we’ll see of The Drunk. Hiccup.”
