Daddy’s Home – In Cinemas Boxing Day – Best advice from Film Dads

22 December 2015

With the imminent release of Daddy’s Home on 26th December, we’ve chosen to look back on films and TV’s best advice from fatherly figures. Movies and television over the years have had some of the most amazing fathers, but also some of the worst.

Advice has always been something that should be passed from a parental figure to their child and so we’d like to give you our list of what we feel is the best guidance from on-screen fathers...

The Pursuit of Happynesss
This film didn’t receive the greatest reviews, but in terms of fatherly advice, it had plenty! Down on his luck Chris Gardner just wants to provide for his wife and son. Selling outdated X-ray machines and barely scraping rent together each month just doesn’t quite cut it however, and his wife leaves them to fend for themselves. This film is a rollercoaster of emotions and tells the story of a man’s willingness to be a better man, for his sake and his son. The piece of advice given was one that sticks with you and something everyone needs to be told at one point in their lives.

The Lion King
Just thinking about this film gets the waterworks flowing, especially when Mufasa is involved. The movie deals a lot with immaturity, standing up for what’s right and making right past misdeeds. If you haven’t seen it by now, you need to rectify that immediately after reading this. It’s a beautifully constructed film and one of Disney’s greats. This scene is a father passing on knowledge to his son and trying to make sure that he becomes a wise and good king.

To Kill a Mockingbird
An acclaimed book and film, this story has become a global favourite. Everyone wanted Atticus as a father from whence they first read or watched the story, as it shows what a kind, gracious and clever man he is. The advice he gives to Scout is one that we should all take away and give to our own children. He talks about seeing things from others points of views and the art of compromise. Gregory Peck absolutely nailed this character and this scene shows it.

We Bought a Zoo
This whole scene is just phenomenal. Not only is it emotional, but it shows how strong a father and their child’s bond can be, even if it goes through some rough patches. It might not be a long speech on how to be the best you can be, but it does address the fact that sometimes you just need to go for something. Forget about everything else and whether you’re scared and just do it. Have that 20 seconds to be embarrassingly brave and who knows what could happen?

Finding Nemo
This film details just how far a father would go for his son. Granted, at the beginning of the film Marlon doesn’t quite get the balance right with his over-protective ways, but when Nemo is taken he stops at nothing to get him back, facing the vast ocean and all of his fears to be reunited with his son. This shows to Nemo just what a father has to be, and Marlin lets his son know he will always protect him. Great advice, for anyone who’s a dad.
