DC Comics Are Coming Out Of The Shadows – Meet The Suicide Squad

19 December 2014

Continuing our analysis of the DC Comics slate, our resident DC Comics expert, Shaun Wren, shared his thoughts on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice last week. This week he shares his thoughts on the Suicide Squad, what many are calling DC's answer to the runaway Marvel hit - Guardians of the Galaxy.

Suicide Squad - 5 August, 2016 (US; UK TBC)

People might not know much about Suicide Squad. Basically, it’s a group of super villains that team up to work for the government and take on potentially suicidal black op missions to cut time off their prison sentences. Luckily, thanks to the great work of the hit Sky One series Arrow and the animated film Batman: Assault on Arkham, people may have some idea of what this team is about.

With David Ayer directing, and off the back of Fury, it’s been reported by Global News filming will start in different locations around Toronto from mid-April to August next year, but it’s not the director I care about (no offence, Dave) it’s the squad itself I’m more interested in.

Oscar-winning Jared Leto will be The Joker, in his first role since scooping the Best Supporting gong for Dallas Buyers Club, while Margot Robbie (Wolf of Wall Street) will appear as Harley Quinn.

We’ll also see Will Smith (Men In Black, Independence Day) as assassin Deadshot, Tom Hardy (Bronson, The Dark Knight Rises) returns to the DC universe as Rick Flagg, an elite soldier of Task Force X and leader of the Suicide Squad.

The final members are Australian actor Jai Courtney (Jack Reacher, A Good Day to Die Hard) taking the role of dysfunctional villain Captain Boomerang and model turned actress Cara Delevingne will portray Enchantress.

After a lot of ifs, buts and maybes, this collective looks the business, with the only surprise being Delevingne’s inclusion. That said, it’s great to see DC taking a chance on two badass female villains.

The biggest news from the announcement is that Oscar winner Jared Leto will be bringing The Joker back to life on the big screen, now is has to be said Joker WILL NOT be a member of the Suicide Squad.

There are still rumours floating around that say Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his role as Lex Luthor, while Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer are all in the running to portray head of Task Force X Amanda Waller and it looks like Warner Bros have found their woman.

Latest reports from Latino Review suggest Viola Davis will be Amanda Waller. It’s not official, but it’s reported Davis is close to signing, it's just a question of fitting it around her busy TV schedule as she is currently headlining How To Get Away With Murder.

If Eisenberg’s Luthor does have a small role to play, it could mean that Lex is the President, or, more plausibly, pulling the strings at a high-end, government level.

Now, while the storyline for this film hasn’t been released, my feeling is this could be centred around Arkham with Flagg leading Task Force X with Leto's Joker a secondary character (I hope) who could be manipulating the squad under Waller's nose and steal the show in the final third of the film.

I’m excited about this film because I don’t think it’ll be as much pressure on it compared to Batman v Superman and I know this sounds stupid, but maybe it'll have a bit of a lower budget compared to Dawn of Justice.

Then you have the cast; Robbie will finally be bringing a character fans have waited years to see on the big screen. You have Leto making The Joker his next role after winning an Oscar and then there’s Hardy which to be honest is pretty much brilliant in everything.

I think this could be a role which Smith can take seriously and could be ideal for him while Courtney hasn’t got a big fan base so he’ll either change people's minds or he’ll make everyone happy and be the first to die or be killed, like in Assault on Arkham where a certain character test Waller and gets his head blown clean off!

Finally casting Delevingne in the role of The Enchantress, the character is a tortured soul and is spiritual. It is very brave from WB/DC but if it pays off then expect to see her again in Justice League Dark.
