DC Comics Are Coming Out Of The Shadows – Wonder Woman
Following last week’s analysis of the eagerly awaited Suicide Squad, Shaun Wren returns with an in depth look at Wonder Woman, starring Fast & Furious 6’s Gal Gadot and Directed by Game of Thrones’ Michelle MacLaren.
Wonder Woman – 23rd June, 2017
Wonder Woman is one of the most famous superhero icons alongside Superman and Batman, she’s a pop culture cementation symbolising strength.
Michelle MacLaren is taking director duties for DC’s first female superhero flick. More people should be excited (mainly due to the success of The Hunger Games franchise), I feel. MacLaren is a fantastic filmmaker, having taken charge of three massive TV shows Breaking Bad, the aforementioned Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.
While a lot has been said about the casting of Gal Gadot, mainly because she’s only known for a couple of Fast and Furious films, I’ll admit I didn’t think she was right for the role either. However, seeing Gadot in full armour, she does look rather badass!
Gadot was in the Israeli Defence Force for two years, and has since been hitting the gym, getting stronger and toning up. Plus, she actually does look like the Wonder Woman in the New 52 comic book series, which seems to be a heavy influence on the DCCU slate.
I don’t see this film being an origin story, either. We'll get glimpse Diana in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, then her part will be expanded for the long-awaited Justice League film, so people will know the character. I’m not saying she won’t return to Themyscira, but it won’t be a Batman Begins origin story.
However, in an interview with Vulture MacLaren mentioned, there’s no official release date or script for the film, despite announcing it on their slate and she was hesitant to disclose the smallest of detail. “I really, really, really can’t talk about this I just picture a drone coming in over the hills and crashing through the glass flying over here and putting duct tape over my mouth, you know?”
Look, there’s no need to think about this film getting red flagged, Warner Bros. are more than likely set to green light it once a film script is in place, currently it has been rumoured there are multiple scripts being written.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, one of the writers is Jason Fuch who’s the writer behind the upcoming Warner Bros film Pan.
A storyline is rumoured (not by Fuch) to be a period piece set in the 1920's were the Amazonian warrior princess leaves Paradise Island to find herself in a world where women have only just got the vote.
There’s also talk of Wonder Woman being a trilogy with the sequel set during World War Two and the third set in a modern day period of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
I must stress these are all rumours, Warner Bros haven’t confirmed a script writer or storyline for this film but I do hope these are more then just rumours because in the right hands this would be an interesting character to see. The possibility of seeing Wonder Woman exploring the early days of women’s liberation is tantalising.
