DEFYING GRAVITY: Continuing The WICKED Journey As Madame Morrible: A Conversation With Sophie-Louise Dann

13 March 2023

When Dorothy famously triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West, we only ever heard one side of the story. Gregory Maguire‘s acclaimed 1995 novel, ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’, re-imagines the Land of Oz, creating a parallel universe to the familiar story written by L. Frank Baum and first published as ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ in 1900.

WICKED TELLS THE INCREDIBLE STORY OF AN UNLIKELY BUT PROFOUND FRIENDSHIP
BETWEEN TWO YOUNG WOMEN:

THE BLONDE AND VERY POPULAR GLINDA… …AND A MISUNDERSTOOD GREEN GIRL NAMED ELPHABA.

Following an encounter with THE WONDERFUL WIZARD, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths… Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power…

…while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future.

their extraordinary adventures in oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as GLINDA THE GOOD and the WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST.

In our interview we speak to Sophie-Louise Dann who brings Madame Morrible to life, she tells us how she got started in the industry, her love for the iconic show and memorable moments...

If we go back to the beginning, was there a defining moment for you to get into the Entertainment Industry?

Early inspiration by visiting the theatre.

It was a special treat to come to London and see a stage production.

One of the first was Jesus Christ Superstar. Such an iconic score.

I saw the original cast of Les Miserables

For me this was the show that made me want to pursue a career in musical theatre.

What can you tell us about WICKED and what made you say yeah I want to be part of this amazing show?

I’ve long wanted to be in WICKED having originally auditioned for Glinda!!

I’m delighted to continue the journey as Madame Morrible in 2023.

It is a role with an interesting story arc.

Be careful what you wish for.

Do you have any memories from making WICKED that you’ll take with you for the rest of your career?

Seeing the iconic production come to life. Hearing the orchestra play the fabulous score; the ensemble in all their glory; the incredible Emerald City costumes; hearing Elphaba and Glinda soar vocally and to be part of one great Ozian family!

Can you talk about some of the challenges you had making WICKED?

Coming into a long running show can be challenging artistically - as it is a formulaic rehearsal process.

But fortunately, there is always scope to make a role your own over time as you become at ease with the show.

WICKED is iconic, and has stood the test of time, what do you think is the secret to its success and longevity?

It is a great story with a very important message about friendship; being different and embracing the journey that takes you on.
