Dinos Chapman Shines a light on John Carpenter

15 April 2013

To celebrate Death Waltz Recording Company’s limited edition double LP release of the soundtrack for John Carpenter’s horror classic, THE FOG, with exclusive artwork by leading British artist Dinos Chapman, Cigarette Burns Cinema and Dealth Waltz are proud to present an exclusive screening of the film on Friday 7th June.

For one night only Cigarette Burns and Death Waltz will take over the Nave, an old deconsecrated church in Islington which is now a licensed arts and performance space, and transform it into a hall of cinematic worship, providing a suitably atmospheric backdrop for a unique film presentation of John Carpenter’s 1980 chiller, screening from a rare original 16mm full scope print, with full exclusive trailer programme support and the evening’s music soundtrack provided by KAB radio.

After the screening Death Waltz will unveil Dinos Chapman’s original artwork for the album cover; his own interpretation of the film. Attendees will be the first people to see this specially commissioned work and will have the chance to purchase the limited edition double LP set before it goes on general sale the following week.

John Carpenter followed up his box office smash Halloween (1978) with The Fog, a supernatural horror based in the sleepy fishing community of Antonio Bay. 100 years ago to the very night a ship was wrecked off the California coast, misled by a false beacon light. An eerie fog enveloped the ship as it went down. Local superstition has it that when the fog returns, the murdered mariners will rise from their watery graves and seek bloody vengeance. As night falls on the eve of the town’s centenary a dense fog appears and starts to move across the water towards the bay. Lock your doors! Bolt your windows! There’s something in the fog!

As an internationally renowned solo artist, and together with his brother Jake, Dinos Chapman makes iconoclastic sculpture, prints and installations that examine, with searing wit and energy, contemporary politics, religion and morality. The Chapmans have exhibited extensively, including numerous shows at White Cube, Tate Britain, and Tate Liverpool. Most recently Dinos Chapman released his own experimental, electronic debut album, Luftbobler.

On working on The Fog artwork Chapman says, “The offer to design a sleeve for a soundtrack to a film I loved isn't one that comes along very often (surprisingly), the fact that Death Waltz’s editions are on vinyl and push both the art and the music to the forefront in equal measure appealed completely. It was great to be given free reign to go off and create exactly what I wanted, tapping into my own reaction to Carpenter’s masterpiece.”

Cigarette Burns Cinema is one of London’s leading cult film nights. Founded by Josh Saco in 2008, Cigarette Burns prides itself on presenting often overlooked or rarely screened cult and genre gems. Projecting from original, rare 16mm and 35mm prints where available to allow for a ‘genuine’ film experience. Cigarette Burns hosts a regular film night at the Prince Charles, Rio Dalston and Phoenix in East Finchley cinemas and has previously collaborated with The Last Tuesday Society, Scala Forever/Beyond and the East End Film Festival.  Previous Cigarette Burns late nights films have included Ms. 45, Profondo Rosso, Danger: Diabolik, The Keep and Who Could Kill a Child. Cigarette Burns have recently secured sponsorship from Carharrt.

On the collaboration with Death Waltz Cigarette Burns Founder Josh Saco added; “In a time where more and more of our viewing experience can be replicated in the comfort of our own homes, it becomes more and more important for screenings to retain the magic that we once enjoyed, the flicker and the buzz of the big screen. Coming outside of the confines of a cinema for the first time to screen Carpenter’s classic horror and have an opportunity to partner with Death Waltz on their album release with Dinos Chapman, we’ve pulled out all the stops to create the ultimate pop up Cigarette Burns Cinema.

”Founded by Spencer Hickman, coordinator of Record Store Day, in 2011 Death Waltz Recording Company is a soundtrack label that specializes in high end vinyl reissues. Extensive liner notes from composers and directors as well as exclusive all new artwork, commissioned by contemporary artists, re-interpreting cult classics has won critical and consumer acclaim for their bespoke limited edition vinyl releases.
