Dredd producer Stuart Ford promises authentic take on the 2000 AD character

With the reboot to Judge Dredd coming to cinemas later this year, executive producer Stuart Ford has promised that the film will deliver an "authentic" take on the 2000 AD character.

Ford tells RedCarpetNewsTV that the R-rated film will be darker than the 1995 Sylvester Stallone-fronted version, and have a "real edginess" to it explaining "The version of Dredd that we've made is very authentic to the original 2000 AD comic character, it's gritty, it's dark, it's deadpan. We've made a movie that has a real edginess to it.

It has a great visual style with an authenticity to it. It has a propulsive, super contemporary score. We think Dredd fans, fanboys, action fans, or anybody who appreciates really innovative cinema is going to really respond to the movie."

Ford also praised lead actor Karl Urban adding "Karl Urban brings very square jaw, which is important. The key thing on this version of Dredd was that in order to stay loyal to original the character, Dredd never removes his helmet.

That's a challenge for an actor to make that character believable and interesting - I wouldn't go so far as to say likeable - when you never see their eyes.

Karl, who grew up as a fan of Dredd, absolutely understood what we needed, and when people see the movie they will see that he is Dredd, that dark, complex, unforgiving, but at the same time, utterly reliable kick-ass Dredd character that we've been waiting to see in a movie for a long time."

Dredd comes to UK screens on September 7 and also features Olivia Thirlby and Game of Thrones queen Lena Headey.
