Elizabeth Olsen Breakthrough star of the Sundance Film Festival

23 January 2011

Elizabeth Olsen the younger sister of the Olsen twins is taking the Sundance Film Festival by storm with not one but two films. The 21 year old senior at NYU’s Film School is being crowned as the Breakthrough star of the festival with the films Silent House and Martha Macy May Marlene.

Olsen is in every shot of Silent House, since the camera follows her in a single shot throughout the film, either behind her shoulder or in front of her, capturing the rising fear, then panic then hysteria that she effectively sustains through the film’s 90 minutes.

Filmed with one camera by visionary directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau who shot the one camera thriller Open Water shot Silent House in 5 weeks and based it on a Uruguayan film with the same name.

Talking at Sundance, the breakthrough star spoke of the shoot “By the end of the day you’d have given all you can every time – it was exhausting, I had lots and lots of migraines and sinus infections from breathing in snot. It was just really exhausting.”

No news yet on a cinematic release in the UK, but Elizabeth Olsen is definitely one to watch.
