Fansites + Film Festivals + Red Carpets + Face-to-Face Interviews – The Fan Carpet: From Fansite Roots to 22 Years of Film Coverage

Co-Founder & Editor, The Fan Carpet

For over two decades, The Fan Carpet has been dedicated to connecting fans with the films, filmmakers and actors that inspire them.

But the story of The Fan Carpet did not begin on a red carpet.

It began with a fansite.

Fansite Roots

The origins of The Fan Carpet can be traced back to 1998, with the launch of the fansite Kirsten-Dunst[dot]org, founded by Jessica Alken.

At a time when the internet was still finding its voice, fansites were often the centre of online communities — places where people could share news, images and discussions about the films and artists they loved.

Kirsten-Dunst[dot]org quickly became one of those communities, growing into a hub for fans of actress Kirsten Dunst. The site even became known to Kirsten herself, who referenced it in an early interview.

In 2002, I joined the project after responding to a call for help in the site’s email newsletter. What began as helping with galleries and media quickly developed into a deeper involvement in the growing fansite network that Jessica was building.

The Birth of The Fan Carpet

By 2003, the network had expanded beyond a single site and the idea of creating something larger began to take shape.

At the time I was running a design company called Fuzion Studio, and an early concept for linking the growing network of fansites was a project called “Fuzing Fansites.”

But by late 2003, a different idea emerged — one that would define the platform’s future.

The Fan Carpet.

If the red carpet represented the world of film premieres and industry events, then The Fan Carpet would bring that experience closer to the fans themselves.

When The Fan Carpet officially launched in 2004, the mission was simple: connect fans with the films and creators they were passionate about.

Eventually, I folded Fuzion Studio into The Fan Carpet. As the platform gained notoriety, it became clear that my focus needed to be on growing The Fan Carpet. Web design and graphic design could still exist within the platform — something I still occasionally do today.

Growing Into a Film Platform

As the years passed, The Fan Carpet evolved from a network rooted in fansite culture into a platform covering film premieres, interviews and festivals.

Written interviews soon became a regular feature of the site, beginning with early conversations with actors such as Kate Bosworth and Aly Michalka.

Video coverage followed shortly afterwards, beginning with fan reaction videos and eventually developing into red carpet interviews with filmmakers and actors.

Press conferences were also a big part of the early years. One of the first we attended for print coverage featured Michael Mann and Johnny Depp for Public Enemies. We also attended the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen press conference with Michael Bay, Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf, among others.

That was also the first press conference where I was called upon to ask a question.

Festivals also became a key part of the journey, particularly FrightFest, which The Fan Carpet has now covered for over sixteen years.

Building an Archive of Film Coverage

Today The Fan Carpet has grown into a substantial archive of film coverage.

Across its website and video channels, the platform now includes:

  • More than 21,000 articles

  • Over 2,000 videos across The Fan Carpet’s YouTube channels

  • Coverage spanning premieres, festivals and interviews with filmmakers around the world

What began as a small fansite community has evolved into a long-running platform dedicated to celebrating film and the people who make it.

Looking Toward the Future

As The Fan Carpet enters its 23rd year, the journey continues to evolve.

For more than two decades the platform has focused on supporting filmmakers, championing independent cinema and documenting the stories behind the films we love.

And as the next chapter begins, that same spirit — the passion of fans connecting with the world of film — remains at the heart of everything The Fan Carpet does.

Because in many ways, the story that began with a simple fansite in 1998 is still being written today.
