Felicity Jones and Russell Brand attend ‘The Tempest’ premiere in New York

03 October 2010

The Lincoln Center in Manhatten was taken over last night by the premiere for 'The Tempest' during the 48th New York Film Festival.

The stars were out in force, English rose Felicity Jones and funnyman Russell Brand were amongst the stars to attend the premiere for the film adaptaptation of William Shakespere's "The Tempest".

In the film, Felicity plays Miranda the daughter of Prospera portrayed by the magnificent Helen Mirren, while Brand portrays Trinculo. The film is expected to reach our shores in 2011.

In Julie Taymor's version of 'The Tempest,' the gender of Prospero has been switched to Prospera. Going back to the 16th or 17th century, women practicing the magical arts of alchemy were often convicted of witchcraft. In Taymor's version, Prospera is usurped by her brother and sent off with her four-year daughter on a ship. She ends up on an island; it's a tabula rasa: no society, so the mother figure becomes a father figure to Miranda. This leads to the power struggle and balance between Caliban and Prospera; a struggle not about brawn, but about intellect.

Felicity will next be seen in 'Albatross' with Julie Ormond, which is due out in 2011, while Brand can be heard as the voice of Dr. Nefario in 'Despicable Me' with Steve Carell which sees its UK release on October 15th.
