Fifty Shades of Grey has cemented its status as a global phenomenon by rocketing to the top of the UK and Ireland Box Office following its release on Friday 13th February. The hugely anticipated adaptation garnered £13.5 million in its opening weekend, with a per-screen average of £23k, taking more than the rest of the top 10 combined.

Taking 58% of the total market, Fifty Shades of Grey is the UK and Ireland's biggest ever 18 certificate and non-franchise/sequel opening as well as the largest February and Valentine's Day debut. The film is also the biggest debut of 2015 so far.

 

 

The trailer for the film amassed over 250million views worldwide. E L James’ Fifty Shades trilogy has been translated into 51 languages and sold more than 100 million copies in e-book and print, making it one of the biggest and fastest-selling book series ever.

Fifty Shades of Grey stars Jamie Dornan in the iconic role of Christian Grey opposite Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele.  The film is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and produced by Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti alongside E L James, the creator of the series.  The screenplay for the film is by Kelly Marcel.
