Filmmaking legend Steven Spielberg has confirmed that his next project will be the eagerly awaited Ready Player One from Warner Bros & DreamWorks.

According to Empire the Lincoln Director showed interest in the project in March but this is first official confirmation.

Ready Player One follows a young gamer named Wadd Watts who escapes into the virtual world of Oasis which allows global users to live the idyllic lives they want to.

But when the game's billionaire creator dies and sets up a Charlie & The Chocolate Factory-style treasure hunt for users to win his fortune, things turn dangerous as rivals and corporations battle their way to the money.

Written by Ernie Cline and Eric Eason with Zak Penn peppering pop culture, video games, comic and movie references throughout, Ready Player One is set for release on December 15 2017.

Spielberg’s next directorial offering will be the Tom Hanks starring Bridge of Spies on November 27 and he currently has Roald Dahl’s classic The BFG in post production and hits cinemas on July 22 next year.
