From Ratchet & Clank to Assassin’s Creed: The Fan Carpet and I Want Cheats look to the Future of Video Game Adaptations

22 April 2016

Video Games have a long history in Hollywood with being adapted into feature films, from the abysmal Super Mario Bros. in 1993, the cult favourite Mortal Kombat in 1995 to the mediocre Doom in 2005 to the incredibly successful Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in 2010 and the hugely popular Resident Evil franchise that first hit Cinemas in 2002, with subsequent sequels in 2004, 2007, 2010, 2012 and a sixth and possibly final entry in 2017.

With the hopes of a Video Game adaptation resurgence resting on the likes of Warcraft and Assassin's Creed, The Fan Carpet in association with I Want Cheats (the premiere place for people can go when they are in need of a little helping hand to complete video games) take a look at some of the eagerly awaited adaptations that are coming to a Cinema near you...

Ratchet and Clank | April 29
Tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Along the way they’ll learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.

The Angry Birds Movie | May 13
The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.

Warcraft: The Beginning | May 30
From Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures comes Warcraft: The Beginning, an epic adventure of world-colliding conflict based on Blizzard Entertainment’s global phenomenon.

The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilisation faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonise another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.

So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.

Assassin's Creed | December 21
Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organisation in the present day.

Assassin's Creed stars Academy Award® nominee Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, 12 Years a Slave) and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, La Vie en Rose). The film is directed by Justin Kurzel (Snowtown, Macbeth) and produced by New Regency, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, DMC Films and Kennedy/Marshall, with 20th Century Fox distributing.

There are also plans for an adaptation of Uncharted which is expected in Cinemas next year and a new version of SEGA royalty Sonic the Hedgehog in 2018, however with a spotty history, the future of Video Game adaptations; whilst having rich material to draw from looks promising, but if history is any indication, they have a long way to go if it is going to be as successful as the Superhero genre.

We remain optimistic, what’s coming looks good, and there’s a lot of great talent involved so with the right narrative surely these can’t fail? Only time will tell.
