Gary Oldman hints at Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy sequel Smiley’s People

27 February 2012

While he lost out on the Best Actor Oscar at last night's Awards ceremony, Gary Oldman has revealed that there may be a big-screen sequel to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

The household name famed for the likes of The Fifth Element, Léon, Dracula and Red Riding Hood hinted that he could have another chance to win Best Actor for playing George Smiley if John le Carré's follow-up novel Smiley's People, the third book in the 'Karla Trilogy' after Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Honourable Schoolboy is adapted for film.

Oldman tells BBC One's Breakfast on the red carpet at the Vanity Fair party "I'm glad that the nomination was for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and we're very proud of the film, but we may be doing Smiley's People, so I might get another go at it."

Oldman joked when asked if he was upset by the defeat declaring "Devastated! No, I'm fine! I had an instinct that it would probably go to the French - they've been winning everything else!"

Oldman returns to cinemas in the July 20 release of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises alongside Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Aidan Gillen, Juno Temple, Matthew Modine, Joey King, Nestor Carbonell, Brett Cullen, Burn Gorman, Michael Papajohn, Tom Conti and Chris Ellis.
