Gary Oldman reveals Ghost of Sir Alec Guinness loomed over Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy set

09 December 2011

With Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy enoying success at the UK box office and opening across America today, Gary Oldman who plays the lead role of George Smiley has revealed it was a challenge to follow in the footsteps of legendary actor Sir Alec Guinness.

Oldman stars in Tomas Alfredson's spy thriller following the footsteps of the late, great Guinness who had previously starred in two television miniseries.

Speaking in a new interview with The AP, Oldman said that it is somewhat intimidating to be compared to one of the all-time great actors.

"The ghost of Guinness just sort of loomed so large over Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, if you're going to play Hamlet, you're going to be measured against all the great Hamlets that have come before you. Or Lear, or Willy Loman, or Blanche DuBois, or whoever.

You're always going to be somewhat in the shadow of a great performance."

Oldman will next be seen as Floyd Banner in John Hillcoat's Wettest County with Tom Hardy on May 4 after which he'll be seen reprising his role of Jim Gordon in The Dark Knight Rises on July 20.
