George Clooney set to write, direct and star in The Monuments Men

08 January 2012

Oscar winning Hollywood icon George Clooney famed for television favourite ER and films including O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Michael Clayton and The Ides of March has set his sights on his next project called The Monuments Men.

Clooney will direct, star in and co write the film with his producing partner Grant Heslov and is the story of a hand-picked group of art experts chosen by the U.S. government to retrieve artwork stolen by the Nazis.

Clooney tells The Wrap at the Palm Springs Film Festival “I’m excited about it, it’s a fun move because it could be big entertainment. It’s a big budget, you can’t do it small -- it’s landing in Normandy.”

Based on the book by Robert M. Edsel called The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History, the film adaptation has been set up at Sony, but while the story will have plenty of meaty roles for actors, Clooney says that it is too early to think about who might fill those roles and adds “Grant and I have been trying to find a project.

"I’m not opposed to doing a commercial film, I’m just opposed to doing a commercial film that doesn’t feel organic to me. So if we’re going to do a commercial film we thought, 'Let’s do something that seems fun and actually have something to say.'”

Clooney meanwhile will be seen alongside rising star Shailene Woodley in The Descendants which comes to UK screens on January 27, He will also be seen in Gravity later this year alongside Sandra Bullock on October 19.
