I Am Number Four hero Alex Pettyfer linked to The Mortal Instruments

24 January 2011

British heartthrob Alex Pettyfer is generating some serious casting rumours. He's been seen in films including the horror comedy Tortured and the romantic comedy Wild Child and has two films that are on the cusp of release.

While his next two films I Am Number Four and Beastly see their UK release dates on 18 February and 15 April respectively he is being linked to the lead role of Jace in the fantasy saga The Mortal Instruments which already sees rising star Lily Collins as the heroine; Clary Fray.

The rights to the novel, written by Cassandra Clare were snapped up by Sony offspring Screen Gems and has director Scott Charles Stewart, the man responsible for Legion and the upcoming Preist (which also stars Collins) firmly attached to direct.

Screen Gems boss Clint Culpepper (and producers/LOTR veterans Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne) apparently believe that Pettyfer is the man to play Jace and have offered him the part. There’s no word on whether he’ll take it yet, so this one remains a rumour for now. But the executives seem to be hinging the film’s shooting schedule on nabbing Pettyfer, so if the deal goes through, expect an official announcement soon.

As for the story, rumour has it that Screen Gems are hoping for Twilight level success with this one, the story centres on a seemingly normal New York teen girl who discovers the “Shadowhunters,” a group dedicated to fighting and destroying demons, and who operate in secret, invisible to most humans. How is it Clary can see them? That would be telling! But perceive them she does, and meets the hunky, sarcastic Jace Wayland, a warrior with lots of tattoos and smouldering sex appeal. Stay tuned to The Fan Carpet for more on this as it develops.
