Idris Elba is Alex Cross

19 August 2010

He's certainly making a name for himself! Talented British actor Idris Elba has signed on to play Dr. Alex Cross in 'Cross', a new installment of James Patterson's bestselling murder mystery series that will be directed by David Twohy from a script by Kerry Williamson.

'The Losers' actor will take over the role from Morgan Freeman who played the good doctor in two thrillers 'Kiss the Girls' in 1997 and 'Along Came A Spider' in 2001, however the new film will be a reboot to the franchise with a preference for a younger hero and more action set pieces and while Paramount has been the sole home to the Cross films so far, this latest outing will be financed independently and offered to studios.

The film is reported to revolve around Cross attempting to leave the FBI and return to his private practise. However, he is lured back in when he believes a serial killer is the one who murdered his wife.

He just wrapped the role of Heimdall in Marvel's 'Thor' alongside Chris Hemsworth and screen legend Anthony Hopkins and next stars in the Screen Gems heist film 'Takers' with Hayden Christensen and Paul Walker.

Elba has also kept his hand in TV. After a memorable arc in NBC's The Office last season, he played the title role in the British detective miniseries drama Luther, and will next be seen in an arc of episodes playing Laura Linney's love interest in the new Showtime series The C Word.
