IN THE LEAD UP TO MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY ON 10 OCTOBER 2020, CELEBRATED YOUTUBER ETHAN PAYNE (BEHZINGA) DISCUSSES HIS OWN STRUGGLE WITH HIS MENTAL HEALTH IN YOUTUBE ORIGINALS: HOW TO BE: BEHZINGA

On Monday 19 October, YouTube Originals will launch the first episode for their new documentary series ‘HOW TO BE: BEHZINGA’. The three-part documentary series tells the story of Behzinga ‒ Ethan Payne, best known as one of massively followed YouTube creators The Sidemen ‒ and his journey from overweight gamer to endurance athlete with an ultimate goal of running the London marathon. Leading up to the event, we see Ethan’s vigorous routine as he trains his stamina, strength and endurance alongside world famous athletes.

In the documentary, Ethan also talks of his struggles with mental illness. Ethan experienced negative thoughts and undiagnosed depression and in a 2020 video revealed he contemplated ending his life. It was an eagerly awaited boxing match that never actually happened that took Behzinga on a fitness journey, transforming his life, his mental wellbeing and his attitude towards life.

Ethan Payne, Behzinga said: “During lockdown, we have all become a lot more aware of our own mental health. Making this documentary has made me look back at my own struggles and dark moments. Through the physical training I’ve done as well as the people I have connected with along the way, I have been better able to focus my mind and deal with my own negative thoughts on a day to day basis. I hope everyone who watches the series can take something positive from that.”

Luke Hyams, the Head of YouTube Originals EMEA said: Ethan’s story is an incredibly powerful one. It’s been inspirational to watch his journey and how, like all of us, he faced up to the challenges of 2020. ‘How To Be: Behzinga’ shows the pressures Ethan has felt and how he has learned to deal with his own negative thoughts in the past, the present and now how he can begin looking to the future. This new documentary gives everyone an insight into the person behind the much-loved ‘Behzinga’ channel and shows how reaching out to others is a positive step in improving our own mental health.”

About Behzinga
Born Ethan Payne, Behzinga is one of the UKs most popular YouTubers with over five million subscribers across his two YouTube Channels and millions of fans and followers on all major social media platforms. He is one seventh and a founding member of The Sidemen who have collectively amassed 25+ billion views on YouTube.

Ethan was born in East London in 1995 and grew up without a father figure in his life. He was exactly what his mother Ruth wanted, “a mischievous little boy”. Bursting with energy and creativity he was a disruptive pupil at school and regularly got into trouble. As a teenager Ethan also had to deal with his mum surviving cancer. Making it through school he channeled his energies into games development at college and even more so in his bedroom where his YouTube career took off. Fast becoming a personality in the online gaming community, he dubbed himself Behzinga and became synonymous for his cheeky chappy personality and infectious laugh. It wasn’t long until the stars aligned with JJ, Josh, Tobi, Simon, Harry & Vik -  The Sidemen were formed.

Being overweight and growing up without a father figure have been two reasons why Behzinga has been on the receiving end of many jokes. With a turbulent past behind him, a career taking off and the pressures of a high volume of videos to upload along with his perfectionist nature it all became too much. Behzinga experienced negative thoughts and undiagnosed depression and in a 2020 video revealed he contemplated ending it all.  It was an eagerly awaited boxing match that never actually happened that took Behzinga on a fitness journey, transforming his life, his mental wellbeing and his attitude towards life. In two years, Behzinga had lost 30KG and became as synonymous for health and fitness as he is for gaming and Sidemen videos.

In early 2020 it was revealed a YouTube Originals docu-series, ‘How To Be: Behzinga’ was to be made all about his life whilst also focusing on the biggest ever challenge – running The London Marathon for Teenage Cancer Trust.
