Award-winning Austrian composer and producer Veronika Hanl shares her new musical project ‘Persephone - Acoustic Sessions’, out now!

Based on the love story and the myth of Hades and Persephone from Greek mythology, Veronika releases two live versions of the track, ‘Persephone Live - Duo’ and ‘Persephone Live - Trio’. On both versions, Veronika has enlisted the vocal stylings of dark-pop singer, songwriter and visual artist Julia Romana and singer-songwriter Oli Deakin aka Lowpines, with the duo version featuring stripped back guitar, and the trio version with Tom Addison on piano.

Working on the track with Lowpines during the lockdown, the music features Veronika’s distinctively cinematic and euphoric composition which amplifies the romance of Lowpines songwriting, complemented perfectly by Julia and Lowpines captivatingly dreamy and sultry vocals.

Speaking of the project, Veronika says, “Since we wrote this track during lockdown, we wanted to write something romantic which people could get lost in, since some people were so far away from their loved ones. 

Julia’s harmonies gave the song this lovely flow, which by reminds you of waves and the ocean. At the beginning of this year I finally found the time to finish the track by adding piano with Tom Addision, and some upright bass with Ben Manning. I wanted to keep the track quite natural in instrumentation and keep the folky vibe. Because basically we are telling a story and I wanted that feel of this in the song.

With this music, I just want listeners to enjoy the two lovely voices from Julia and Lowpines singing together and get engulfed in the romance!”

Naming Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newman, Rachel Portman and James Newton-Howard as her main inspirations, Veronika draws from her combined influences to create her distinctively cinematic soundscapes.

Coming from a background in classical music, she studied composition, music and sound production for media at the University of Applied Sciences in Salzburg and worked for a number of high-profile professionals in the music industry in Vienna.

Since moving to London, she has been an assistant to RTS Craft Award winning Composer Dru Masters, on several TV series, as well as working with award-winning Composer Walter Mair on films and feature documentaries. She has scored award winning and nominated films which have showcased internationally, including the short, ‘Unter Toten - Among The Dead’ which won an award in the Category Best Soundtrack and Best Drama at the SoCal Clips Indie Film Fest in L.A., as well as Best Short at the Manchester Film Festival and at the Toronto International Film Awards. One of her latest works was writing additional music under award winning composer Isobel Waller-Bridge for the Apple TV series ‘Roar’, starring Nicole Kidman and Alison Brie.

Alongside her film work, Veronika now produces music for other artists regularly and is fast becoming part of the new wave of women contributing to their creativity in the industry. “It’s good to see more and more women in the industry - when I started as an intern, I was often the only female in the room. Nowadays more and more women are being trained as engineers, composers and producers, and one of my main goals is to always try and keep it as diverse and balanced as possible when working in a team on music projects - I think it’s very important."
