Isaac Hempstead Wright Unveils The Iron Throne As Statue Lands In Leicester Square To Celebrate Tenth Anniversary Of Game Of Thrones

22 June 2021

A statue of the iconic Iron Throne has been unveiled by Isaac Hempstead Wright (who played Bran Stark in the series) as part of Leicester Square’s ‘Scenes in the Square’ statue trail.

  • From Westeros to London’s Leicester Square to celebrate 10 years since the first season of the show aired in the UK.
  • The Game of Thrones Iron Throne is the tenth statue of the ‘Scenes in the Square’ trail and the first TV show to be included, joining statues of much-loved characters Harry Potter, Laurel & Hardy, Bugs Bunny, Gene Kelly in Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, Mr Bean, Paddington and iconic DC Super-Heroes Batman and Wonder Woman.
  • The highly anticipated new Game of Thrones prequel “House of the Dragon” is coming in 2022.
  • New 4K Ultra HD release of all individual seasons is available now.

The legendary Iron Throne is the newest statue to join ‘Scenes in the Square’, a sculpture trail in London’s Leicester Square.

The new statue depicts the Throne all family houses across Westeros were battling for across eight seasons of the iconic TV series, joining other classic scenes and characters including Wonder Woman, Singin’ in the Rain and Batman.

One of the stars of the series, Isaac Hempstead Wright, who played Bran Stark, comments “Couldn’t be happier to be back in London celebrating Game of Thrones! The show has been a huge part of people’s lives, so to see the Iron Throne in London’s iconic Leicester Square is fantastic.”

It marks the smash hit HBO show’s tenth anniversary, celebrating a decade since Game of Thrones was first broadcast, becoming one of the most successful television series of all time. Game of Thrones was broadcast across 207 countries gaining over 200 awards including Baftas, Emmys, and Golden Globes. The series also holds a total of six Guinness World Records including that of most “in-demand” TV show.

The announcement of the statue unveil coincides with the new 4K Ultra HD release of each season of Game of Thrones, the first time in which individual seasons have been available to buy. All seasons are also available to buy on digital download.

Following the incredible success of the television franchise, the prequel to the story - House of the Dragon – is due to be released in 2022. Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series will focus on the turbulent story of House Targaryen and is based on the George R.R. Martin book Fire & Blood.

Ros Morgan, Chief Executive at Heart of London Business Alliance, comments “The Iron Throne in Leicester Square is just another reason to visit London this summer. UK visitors will have the chance to experience London like never before. In normal times, millions of people travel across the world, every day, to visit London and all it has to offer. In their absence, the public will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to recapture and reconnect with their capital city and visit attractions like the Iron Throne - in the open air and without the crowds.”

Polly Cochrane, WarnerMedia Country Manager for UK and Ireland, comments “We are delighted that The Iron Throne has joined some of the most iconic characters and actors in entertainment as part of the Scenes in the Square Leicester Square trail. Game of Thrones has been enthralling fans for 10 years and we are excited to continue to share its legacy with everyone as we look forward to the next chapter in the franchise.”

The statue joins the nine entertainment icons from the past 100 years, which were unveiled in late February last year and recently granted longer term residency by Westminster Council to remain in Leicester Square until at least July 2023. Adorning the buildings, benches and flower beds of the historic square, visitors can also encounter Harry Potter, Laurel & Hardy, Bugs Bunny, Gene Kelly in Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, Mr Bean, Paddington and iconic DC superheroes Batman and Wonder Woman.

Additional plots in Leicester Square will see new film and entertainment statues take up temporary residence over the next two years. Organisers promise many much-loved and diverse movie icons will soon join the legends gracing the West End, making it a creative film tourism hub.
