James Franco and Anne Hathaway to co-host Oscars 2011

01 December 2010

James Franco and Anne Hathaway have been confirmed to co-host the 83rd Academy Awards on February 27, 2011.

Rumors that the Academy asked the two young Hollywood actors broke yesterday and since been since confirmed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

Hugh Jackman, who hosted the 81st annual ceremony, turned down an offer to return to the Oscar stage, as he'll be working on The Wolverine, the follow-up to X-Men Origins: Wolverine that centers on the character's saga in Japan.

Hathaway, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2009 for Rachel Getting Married, joined Jackman on stage for the Oscars' song-and-dance number that year.

However, what makes the announcement especially interesting is that Franco is one of the front-runners for a "Best Actor" nomination in January (alongside Colin Firth) for his tour-de-force performance in Danny Boyle's 127 Hours.

There will be an avalanche of analysis in the coming weeks on which movies and talent will receive nods at the prestigious ceremony and plenty of armchair punditry about the hosts, but, to me, producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer have picked two perfectly talented names to lead the production just as the awards season gets underway.
