Jaws beach closed down over shark fears
08 September 2009
The beach, which was the setting for Jaws, has been shut down after four great white sharks were spotted.
A stretch of coast in Martha' Vineyard, a popular holiday spot, was closed down by authorities after the sharks were spotted nearby during one of America's biggest holiday weekends. Labor Weekend usually sees thousands descend onto the beach.
The authorities decision comes in stark contrast to the Mayor character in the 1975 movie who decides to keep the beach open during tourist season, despite fears of a shark attack.
The horror movie propelled director Steven Spielberg to super stardom.
