Jesse Eisenberg’s The Social Network Tops US Box Office for 2nd Weekend

12 October 2010

Sony Pictures Releasing are delighted to announce that The Social Network, which opens across the UK this coming Friday (October 15), has topped the US box-office for the second weekend in succession.

A $15.5m take over the weekend (October 8 - 10) has lifted its US gross to $46.1m after 10 days on release, following overwhelmingly rave reviews from US critics (the film currently scores 97% on the influential site Rotten Tomatoes).

The Social Network recorded the lowest second weekend drop of any #1 film at the American box office this year, suggesting that audiences agree with the critics and positive word of mouth is benefitting the film.

Directed by David Fincher, from a script by Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network stars Jesse Eisenberg, British actor Andrew Garfield, and Justin Timberlake. Sorkin and the three actors were in the UK promoting the film last week.

Every age has its visionaries who leave, in the wake of their genius, a changed world - but rarely without a battle over exactly what happened and who was there at the moment of creation. In The Social Network, director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin explore the moment at which Facebook, the most revolutionary social phenomenon of the new century, was invented -- through the warring perspectives of the super-smart young men who each claimed to be there at its inception. The result is a drama rife with both creation and destruction; one that purposefully avoids a singular POV, but instead, by tracking duelling narratives, mirrors the clashing truths and constantly morphing social relationships that define our time.
