Johnny Depp wants to be Elvis

Further to the announcement that Johnny Depp has locked in his eighth collaboration with legendary director Tim Burton in Dark Shadows, the word is that the sought after actor has his sights set on playing the king.

The Pirates of the Caribbean chameleon is said to be considering the lead role in a new Elvis Presley biopic which would concentrate on the events leading up to his death.

A source close to the actor revealed "Johnny has always been fascinated by strong characters and inspirational people like Elvis. "He is excited by the idea of a movie focusing on the dark side of Elvis and his later years as a superstar and an icon. It's still early days but this is a project Johnny is very keen to get off the ground."

Depp has a couple of films out this year, first up on March 4 is Rango. The animated adventure is directed by Pirates of the Caribbean alumni Gore Verbinski is about a chameleon that aspires to be a swashbuckling hero finds himself in a Western town plagued by bandits and is forced to literally play the role in order to protect it.

Following that Depp sets sail for the fourth time as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Directed by Rob Marshall and also stars new mum Penélope Cruz and acting legend Ian McShane, the fourth installment arrives in cinemas on May 18.
