Kirsten Dunst set to make her Feature Film Directorial Debut with Independent Drama The Bell Jar Directing Dakota Fanning

Sought after Hollywood starlet Kirsten Dunst, who was last seen in Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special is set to make her Feature film Directorial Debut with independent drama The Bell Jar.

Adapted from Sylvia Plath’s novel of the same name, The Bell Jar will star Dakota Fanning as Esther Greenwood, a young woman who takes an internship at a magazine in New York City, and then begins to suffer a mental breakdown when she returns home to Boston.

Set for a first-quarter start to production, Dunst has adapted the script with Nellie Kim with Priority Pictures’s Lizzie Friedman, Karen Lauder and Greg Little producing alongside Fanning and Echo Lake Entertainment’s Brittany Kahan, and has Celine Rattray on board as Executive Producer.

Dunst previously stepped behind the camera with a pair of short films; Welcome and Bastard, Welcome starred Winona Ryder and John Hawkes which was screened at Sundance and Bastard starred Brian Geraghty and Lukas Haas, it screened at Tribeca and Cannes.

Dunst currently has Woodshock from filmmaking duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy and Theodore Melfi’s Hidden Figures in post-production, she is gearing up to work on The Beguiled with her The Virgin Suicides collaborator Sofia Coppola.

Fanning was last seen alongside Richard Gere in Andrew Renzi The Benefactor and has Gerardo Naranjo’s Viena and the Fantomes, Martin Koolhoven’s Brimstone and Ewan McGregor’s American Pastoral awaiting release and Ben Lewin’s Please Stand By in post-production, she is also gearing up to star in Janusz Kaminski’s The Postcard Killings.
