Law’s Hamlet slammed by critics

09 October 2009

The Broadway production of Hamlet, which features Jude Law, has been given a harsh time by the critics.

The British actor starred in the West End production earlier this year, and is now beginning a stint at Broadway.

While critics admitted that Law's appearance will bring a whole new audience to the Bard after seeing his performance at the Broadhurst Theatre recently, they accused the production of dumbing down Shakespeare.

The New You Times opined, "If Hamlet talks about his mind, you can bet that Mr Law will point to his forehead, when he mentions the heavens, his arms shoot straight up, and when the guy say his gorge rises, rest assured that he clutches at his stomach."If ever actor were like Mr Law, signed performances for the hard of hearing would be unnecessary."

Elsewhere, Bloomberg News wrote, "(Hamlet) is aimed at neophyte audiences lured to the play not only by the star but with the added promise of a thriller liberally sprinkled with yocks (laughs)."
