Mark Wahlberg says The Fighter sequel will focus on Ward and Gatti fights

12 March 2012

With a sequel to the award winning The Fighter coming our way, Mark Wahlberg who has come a long way since his days as Marky Mark has confirmed that boxer Micky Ward's trilogy of fights with Arturo Gatti will form the basis of the forthcoming follow-up.

Wahlberg who returns to cinemas with the Friday release of Contraband tells Digital Spy "They became very close... and still went in the ring to try to kill each other, it's not really a follow-up to The Fighter.... much more of a study of Micky Ward and his relationship that formed from that first fight with Gatti."

Wahlberg met the late Gatti prior to his portrayal of boxer Ward in the Oscar nominated 2010 film and hopes that his Contraband director Baltasar Kormákur will tackle the sequel.

Contraband opens on Friday and features the stellar cast of Kate Beckinsale, Lukas Haas, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi and J.K. Simmons.
