07 August 2013

She returns to cinemas with John Wells's August: Osage County in January, and word is that cinema legend Meryl Steep is set to join the legendary Jeff Bridges in Phillip Noyce's The Giver.

Deadline report that Steep will take on the role of chief elder in the adaptation of Lois Lowry's bestselling all-ages novel that is set in a fantasy dystopian society in which mankind has sacrificed its history and emotions. People fear freedom and have their professions assigned to them for life.

Streep joins the cast that also includes Brenton Thwaites who will star as Jonas, the Receiver of Memories who is tutored by The Giver (Bridges) the caretaker of mankind's memories who is tasked with understanding the lies upon which their society is based.

After he received a recommendation from his daughter, Bridges bought the rights to The Giver two decades ago and the adaptation has also caught the attention of True Blood and Battleship star Alexander Skarsgard and Shameless's Cameron Monaghan who are said to be in talks for roles in the film.

Streep also has The Homesman and Into the Woods on her slate.
