Annie Dwyer (No Escape)
Annie Dwyer (Lake Bell), her husband, Jack (Owen Wilson), and two daughters move to a Southeast Asian country when her husband accepts a job at an American engineering firm. Not long after arriving they find themselves in the middle of a violent uprising. As the family desperately fights to escape the vicious attacks and flee the country, Annie goes to extreme lengths to keep her family safe, even if that means acting out of character for their chance of survival; from catching her daughter after being thrown from a building to attacking a man holding her daughter at gunpoint. There is nothing Annie won’t do for her children.

Slim Hiller (Enough)
In thriller, Enough, Jennifer Lopez plays a wife and mother named Slim. When Slim realises her husband is having an affair and initiates a plan to leave him, he becomes domestically violent. Unyielding, she presses to escape his grasp and get herself and her daughter far from where he can find them. After he continues to pursue and abuse her, she decides there is only one way to stop his attacks. Slim sends her daughter to Hawaii with a friend to keep her safe, hires a self-defence trainer and arrives at her husband’s home in Los Angeles. After he attacks her from behind, she puts to use what she learned in her lessons and ends the threat he was to her and her daughter’s life.

Leigh Anne Tuohy (The Blind Side)
The Blind Side is the heart-warming film based on the true story of Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) and her relationship with her adopted son, Michael “Big Mike”. Michael has been through several families in foster care since he was young, but every time he is placed in a new home he runs away. His friend’s dad enrols his son and Michael into a local Christian school. When they see his size they think he would be a great asset to the school’s American football team. Leigh Anne notices Michael after her young son, S.J., befriends him at school. She realises he is troubled and alone and invites him to join the family for events, and he slowly morphs into becoming part of the Tuohy family. Leigh Anne notices Michael sleeping in the local Laundromat and offers him to spend the night, after realising he doesn’t have a real family or a home, she invites him into theirs. Leigh Anne and her husband, Sean, become his legal guardian and encourage him in taking his American football skills to play for a university team. Michael chooses his new parents’ alma mater, Ole Miss, and goes on to play football in the NFL.

Christine Collins (Changeling)
Changeling is the heart-rendering and unsettling drama that follows the true story of mother, Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie), whose son goes missing but when she is supposedly reunited with him, she quickly realises he is not her son after all. She forcefully fights the corrupt police force who insists the boy is her son and calls her delusional and unwell. She does not give up and takes the boy to the doctor and dentist to provide viable proof the boy is not her own, and although the doctors say he cannot be her son, Christine is admitted to a mental hospital after the law enforcement department deems her psychotic. Even after her release and the governmental acknowledgement the boy is truly not hers, she does not give up the search, and continued until she died in 1964.

Sophie Zawistowski (Sophie’s Choice)
Sophie’s Choice follows the life of Sophie (Meryl Streep), an Auschwitz concentration camp survivor. It isn’t until towards the end of the film we learn that upon Sophie’s arrival at Auschwitz, she was forced to choose which one of her two children would be gassed and which would proceed to the labour camp. This is a decision Sophie can’t make and it isn’t until they threaten to kill both of her children that she makes the heartbreaking choice. She chose her son, Jan, to be sent to the children's camp as he was the youngest child, and her daughter, Eva, to be sent to her death, a decision that haunts her forever.
