Pacific Rim’s Idris Elba reveals Luther big screen outing will be an origin story

20 June 2013

While he returns to cinemas in July for the release of Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, Idris Elba has revealed that the planned big screen outing for TV favourite Luther will be an "origin story".

Speaking at a BAFTA screening last night, Elba explained "If we do decide to make this film, the spine of the film will probably come from The Calling - which is the book - and that starts at the beginning of who Luther is and where he's come from."

Elba added that he hopes the 'origin' movie will bring "a new audience for Luther but... also... keep the fans interested".

He further explained "The movie is a goal, it's a goal for Neil and I, for sure - we've talked about it at length. We haven't got into any sort of deal stage or anything like that, but it's certainly a goal.

We did six episodes on television, then we did four, then we waited a year and a half and then we did another four. That's training our fans to gear up towards what could be either a film or maybe a television special and then a film."

Elba will also return to his role of Heimdall in Alan Taylor's Thor: The Dark World which hits cinemas on October 30.
